DISEC (GA 1)
The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is the first committee of the General Assembly. It's mandate is to “consider the general principles of co-operation in the maintenance of international peace and security, including the principles governing disarmament and the regulation of armaments”. Hence, dealing with disarmament, global challenges and threats to international security and peace are its considerations. It also cooperates closely with the UN Disarmament Commission and the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament to resolve issues such as weapons of mass destruction, arms race in outer space and establishing comprehensive programs of disarmament and transparency in armaments.
SOCHUM (GA 3)
The Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is the third committee of the General Assembly. Its agenda relates to a range of human rights issues, and social, humanitarian affairs. Examinations of human rights is a crucial part of the work that it focuses on.There are five main phases it usually deal with: advancement of women, the protection of children, indigenous issues, and the treatment of refugees, the promotion of fundamental freedoms through the elimination of racism and racial discrimination, and the right to self- determination. It also concerned about social development questions such as issues related to youth, ageing, persons with disabilities, crime prevention, criminal justice, and international drug control.
Topic: The Control of Bio-chemical Weapons
Bio-chemical Weapons, as we know them in the modern area, has resulted in countless casualties globally. Between the infamous mustard gas, Agent Orange and more, there is no doubt in the danger of such weapons. The Geneva Protocol, signed in 1925, was a welcome step towards the prohibitions of bio-chemical weapons in warfare but left, however, several shortcomings. Between development, production or stockpiling of bio-chemical weapons, many states not party of the protocol were still gravely affected. Decades later, progress has been made after the implementation of Chemical Weapons Convention and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. With several countries still not on board along with other numerous problems to be solved, the journey with bio-chemical weapons is far from over.
Topic: The Protection Toward Espionage Activities
Indeed, espionage is a word that brings in mind well-known 007 James Bond movies, which have shaped a common image of how a secret agent's job looks like. However, Bond only exists in Hollywood movies. Espionage, or casually said as spying, is broadly defined as an act that involves a government, company or individual acquiring secret information without the permission of the holder. Since it is a severe violation of the privacy and state sovereignty, the international society has established several international laws and treaties after cold war to protect individuals and states from being spied. On December 10, 2013, SOCHUM adopted a draft resolution affirming that surveillance and collection of personal information violate the universal human right to privacy and expression. This resolution is the single UN document addressing mass surveillance and is considered to be only the first step towards eliminating unlawful electronic espionage. Therefore, this issue remains on the agenda of SOCHUM.
